Band marking is the application of a circular color band at regular intervals along a conductor’s insulation to assist with circuit identification or color coding.
Band marking is an identification method used in commercial and industrial cable systems to distinguish conductors without relying solely on solid-color insulation. Narrow colored rings, applied through ink, heat-stamped pigment, or printed bands, are added at consistent intervals along the wire’s insulation. In multi-conductor assemblies, band marking enables easy differentiation of wires sharing the same base insulation color, supporting clear wiring layouts and documentation. For example, a white conductor with a red band can be distinguished from a white conductor with a green band in control or signal systems. Band markings are especially valuable in space-limited applications where printed legends are impractical, helping maintain organized and reliable cabling in automation, fire alarm, AV, and security systems.
Color codes and conductor marking conventions, including band marking, are often guided by NEC (National Electrical Code), NFPA, UL, and TIA standards, depending on the application.
The use of band marking developed as multi-conductor and bundled cable designs became more common in industrial and commercial wiring. It provided a simple yet reliable way to identify wires when solid-color insulation options or printed legends were not sufficient, and remains widely used in modern manufacturing and system integration.
