Built to complement SmartWire low-voltage cable
All Windy City Wire cables are low-voltage SmartWire products manufactured in the United States. Our connectors and tools are selected to pair seamlessly with SmartWire Category Cable so field teams can pull, prep, and terminate with confidence. SmartWire Glide Technology lubrication is applied to SmartWire cable jackets during manufacturing to reduce friction during pulling; combined with the correct termination tools and shielded connectors, this helps teams complete outdoor runs efficiently while protecting electrical performance.

Next steps
Ready to build dependable outdoor copper channels? Contact your Windy City Wire representative or authorized distributor for guidance on selecting shielded Cat6A connectors and the appropriate termination tools for your SmartCAT outdoor cable builds.
AWG is a cable attribute, not a feature of tools or connectors. The RJ45 Cat6A 10 Gig shielded connector in this category is designed to terminate typical Category Cable conductor sizes and supports conductor O.D. ranges of 0.048–0.052 inches (with overall cable diameters up to 0.310 inches). For exact AWG compatibility, match the connector to your selected SmartWire Category Cable or contact Windy City Wire for guidance.
Tools and shielded RJ45 connectors are supplied in their standard finishes. If you need cable color options, SmartWire cable offers a wide range of jacket and stripe colors, including custom combinations, to help standardize your installations and visually identify circuits.
These are tools and connectors, so they do not contain conductors. The RJ45 Cat6A shielded connector is compatible with both solid and stranded conductors and utilizes a conductive load bar for reliable terminations. For best results, use the Tele-Titan Xg 2.0 crimp tool (PTM-12516C) specified for these terminations.
Windy City Wire manufactures and stocks SmartWire Category Cable in 1,000 ft as our standard length. SmartWire is the brand name of our U.S.-manufactured low-voltage cable and is part of our complete solution to help improve safety and efficiency while reducing labor costs. All stock SmartWire cables also include SmartWire Glide lubrication applied during manufacturing to reduce pulling friction by up to 70%.
Our SmartWire Category Cable is packaged in our patented RackPack carton to help maximize labor savings and on-site efficiency. Learn more about our RackPack: https://windycitywire.com/solutions/rackpack-overview
- CAT5e: Up to 1 Gbps at 100 m; 100 MHz bandwidth; typically UTP; suitable for basic data/voice and standard PoE.
- CAT6: 1 Gbps at 100 m; 10 Gbps up to ~55 m; 250 MHz; improved crosstalk control; good for higher-density networks and PoE+.
- CAT6A: 10 Gbps at 100 m; 500 MHz; superior alien-crosstalk performance; often thicker cable; ideal for Wi‑Fi 6/6E backhaul and high-power PoE++ deployments.
- CAT7: 10 Gbps at 100 m; typically 600–1000 MHz; fully shielded (S/FTP) constructions; uses non-standard connectors (e.g., GG45/TERA) rather than RJ45 and is not TIA-recognized in North America. For most RJ45-based ecosystems, CAT6A is the recommended 10G copper standard.
Color conventions vary by organization, but common practices include:
- Blue: General data/patching
- Gray: Standard horizontal runs
- White: Office/ceiling drops or WAPs
- Yellow: Cameras/PoE devices
- Green: Uplinks/cross-connects or security
- Red: Critical systems/voice/VLANs that require quick identification
- Orange: Demarc/ISP handoff or inter-building links
- Purple: AV/VoIP or vendor-specific networks
- Black: Outdoor/low-visibility/broadcast or stage
- Brown: Building automation/controls
- Pink: Specialty/test or temporary circuits
- Aqua/Teal: Often reserved for higher-performance links in data centers (verify your site standard).
