Stranded bare copper conductors for flexibility and reliable terminations in security and access control installations.
Windy City Wire manufactures and stocks SmartWire Security & Access Control cable in a 1,000 ft standard length. This series is also available in 500 ft lengths.
BACnet (MS/TP) typically runs over RS485 cabling: a shielded, twisted pair (120 Ω) for differential signaling, supporting multidrop networks and long runs in noisy environments.
RS232 is single-ended and point-to-point, short distance, and often uses a shielded multi-conductor cable (e.g., TX, RX, GND); it is more susceptible to noise and not intended for long runs.
RS485 is differential, supports multidrop (bus) topologies, long distances (up to thousands of feet at lower data rates), and relies on shielded twisted pair with proper termination and biasing. In short: BACnet MS/TP commonly uses RS485-type cable; RS232 requires fewer conductors and is for short, point-to-point links; RS485 uses twisted, shielded pairs for longer, noise-immune networks.
