Dolby Pro Logic builds on the original Dolby Surround format by offering more precise steering of audio information into distinct playback channels. While the source material is still encoded as a standard two-channel stereo signal, Pro Logic circuitry analyzes phase and amplitude cues embedded within the audio track. These cues allow the decoder to separate the content into four functional channels: left, center, right, and a mono surround channel. This creates a more directional and immersive listening environment without requiring discrete multichannel delivery formats.
For commercial AV environments, Dolby Pro Logic has historically been an important bridge between stereo content and more advanced surround technologies.
